New Border Measures on Imported Medical Masks

Taichung Customs reminds the new border measures over imported medical masks, importers of medical masks should correctly declare the commodity classification code and apply for inspection to the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Health (TFDA) for approval, to ensure the quality and effectiveness of medical masks and maintain the national health in response to the need for COVID-19 prevention.


As the global COVID-19 pandemic continues to rise, the demand for global medical masks has increased. In order to prevent importing inferior masks into Taiwan and to facilitate clear management and convenient statistics, the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs has added an exclusive commodity classification CCC code 6307.90.50.31-1 “Medical Masks, of Textile Materials”, which came into effect on 1 July, 2020. In addition, effective as 7 July, 2020, TFDA has conducted medical masks in border inspection. Importation of medical masks is governed by regulation of F03. Imported medical masks should apply to the TFDA for an import inspection. The said measures are in favor of managing the transparent circulation of imported medical masks and tracking its supply chain.


Taichung Customs reminds in the customs declaration of imported medical masks, it is necessary to submit a copy of a medical device permit license or an approval document issued by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The permit license number (consisting of 14 letters and digits) must be listed in the import declaration. In addition, the importer shall apply for an inspection to the TFDA according to the Regulations for the Inspection and Examination of Imported Medicaments. When the comparison of abovementioned approval document with permit license number and border inspection are exactly fulfilled, the cargo will be released.
