Passengers entering or leaving Taiwan carrying cash exceeding the prescribed limits should immediately declare it to Customs. The permissible amounts vary depending on circumstances and the currencies involved. Offenders may be liable to penalty.

Passengers should be aware of the following requirements about carrying cash:

1. Foreign Currencies

Any amount exceeding this limit without declaration shall be liable to confiscation pursuant to the Foreign Exchange Regulating Act.

2. Renminbi (RMB)
The limit for RMB being carried into or out of Taiwan is RMB 20,000 per person.
Any amounts exceeding this must be declared to, and deposited with Customs. The said amounts can be reclaimed on departure. Any contravention will be dealt with in accordance with the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area. The amount exceeding the limit shall be confiscated.

3. New Taiwan Dollars
The limit is NTD 100,000 for individual passengers entering or leaving Taiwan. Any amount exceeding this can only be imported or exported with a special certificate of approval issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of China. Those who have no such special approval must deposit their NTD with the Customs and reclaim it upon next departure. For outbound passengers who will not be returning to Taiwan, the said item could be collected by an agent.
