4227156771.jpgKaohsiung Customs successfully intercepted smuggled cigarettes jointly with TCOPP (The Third Special Police Corps, National Police Agency, Ministry of the Interior), CGA (Coast Guard Administration) and KHPD (Kaohsiung Harbor Police Department). On the morning of February 5th 2014, the Custom officers hunted down and seized a container load of smuggled cigarettes at No.69 wharf. This smuggled shipment, consisting of 500,000 packs in 1,000 cartons, was packed in a 40-foot container and declared as PC cellphone cases in 877 cartons from Indonesia.

By analyzing the intelligence data from the above mentioned agencies, the Customs sagacious officers singled out this container among the all containers carried by the ship. Due to the fact that the scanned images of the container shown on the monitor of the Customs’ large-scale X-ray machine were dubious, the officers on duty thus decided to open the door and found the whole container load of foreign cigarettes with a total market value of about $25 million NTD ($833,000 USD).

Kaohsiung Customs further said that imported cigarettes are subject to 27% import duty, 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) as well as $20 NTD ($0.7 USD) of Health and Welfare Surcharge per pack. The heavy taxes and surcharges of cigarettes have kept up cigarettes prices therefore smuggling foreign cigarettes into Taiwan has been always a lucrative business. However, to safeguard Taiwan nationals’ health and maintain the normal flow of international trade, the Customs has spared no efforts to fight against cigarette smuggling persistently. Moreover, the Customs has appealed for public to inform against smugglers and provided a toll-free call: 0800-711117.
