Inbound Passengers are Reminded to Comply with the Quantity Limits for Alcohol and Tobacco

Summer time means happy overseas holidays for many people; in the meantime, Keelung Customs would like to remind travelers to be aware of the quantity limits for tobacco and alcohol so as not to spoil the fun.

Inbound passengers aged 20 or above can bring one liter of alcoholic beverage (no limitation on the number of bottles), plus 200 cigarettes, or 25 cigars or one pound of tobacco into the country without duty payment. Passengers carrying exceeding amount of tobacco and alcoholic products must pass through the Red Channel and file a voluntary declaration to the Customs. Failure to comply with the above regulations could result in fines and the confiscation of the exceeding amount. The fines to be imposed are: NT$500 per carton of cigarette; NT$3,000 per pound of tobacco; NT$4,000 per 25 cigars; and NT$2,000 per liter of alcohol, according to Article 45 of the Tobacco and Alcohol Administration Act.

Moreover, if more than 5 liters of alcohol (no limitation on how many bottles, but alcoholic beverage imported from Mainland China is limited to one liter), or more than 1,000 cigarettes (five cartons), 125 cigars or 5 pounds of tobacco are being brought in by an adult passenger, these goods will not be released without import permits from the Ministry of Finance or a copy of the license permit for tobacco/alcohol importer, further stressed by Keelung Customs.

To ensure smooth Customs clearance, Keelung Customs urges travelers to declare their luggage honestly on the Customs declaration form. Those carrying dutiable, controlled or restricted articles without correct declaration may face a fine or confiscation of the items based on the Anti-smuggling Act and the relevant regulations. For any questions in regard to declaration procedures or regulations, please consult the Customs officers in advance, or go through the “Goods to Declare” counter (Red Channel) to avoid penalties.
